The Day of the Dead stands as one of Mexico's most cherished traditions, a vibrant celebration that honors departed loved ones while embracing the continuity of life with joy and color. At Princess Hotels Riviera Maya, guests discover an authentic immersion into this UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, set against the stunning backdrop of the Mexican Caribbean.

Celebrated annually on November 1st and 2nd, the Day of the Dead weaves together pre-Hispanic roots with Catholic traditions. Ancient civilizations including the Mexicas, Mayans and Purépechas viewed death not as an ending but as a transformation into another phase of existence. Today, Mexican families create elaborate altars adorned with photographs, candles, sugar skulls, marigolds and their loved ones' favorite foods, choosing remembrance filled with love rather than sorrow.

During this special time, Princess Hotels transforms its resorts with traditional decorations featuring regional altars, colorful tissue paper, Mexican marigolds and artistic skulls that bring these spaces to life. The warm climate, pristine beaches and tropical landscapes provide an ideal setting for experiencing this profound cultural celebration.

At Grand Riviera Princess, guests encounter colorful offerings throughout the property along with performances inspired by Day of the Dead traditions. Platinum Yucatán Princess takes the celebration further as hotel staff construct altars representing different Mexican regions, showcasing their unique symbolism and cultural richness. In the evening, a spectacular parade of Catrinas accompanied by mariachi music fills the resort, inviting visitors to dance, photograph and fully participate in this distinctive tradition.

Each element of the Day of the Dead carries deep meaning. Marigolds guide souls with their vibrant scent and color, while bread of the dead represents generosity and hospitality. Guests at Princess Hotels Riviera Maya engage with these customs through interactive workshops, exhibitions and performances that connect them to the tradition's essence.

The celebration also includes the legend of the Nagual, an ancient Mesoamerican belief that each person has a spirit animal protector. On the Day of the Dead, these mystical beings serve as guardians of souls, guiding them on their journey to the next world.

Experiencing the Day of the Dead at Princess Hotels Riviera Maya offers more than a tourist attraction. It provides an opportunity to connect with Mexico's most iconic traditions, creating lasting memories filled with color, music and profound cultural significance.
