The state of Florida is the unquestioned leader when it comes to spring break in the United States.

And it has been ever since Gidget first put on a bathing suit decades ago. (Kids, engage your parents in conversation about her. They’ll get a big kick out of it).

But there’s more than just Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Keys. Florida has more than 1,000 miles of coastline.

Here is one person’s subjective opinion on where to go for an outside-the-box spring break, although everybody has their favorite.

Anna Maria Island

Many of these choices happen to be on the state's West Coast, away from the congestion of the East Coast. Located near Naples in Southwest Florida, Anna Maria Island is perfect for families. And especially those with young children.

Cocoa Beach

Located near the Melbourne area, not only does Cocoa Beach have a great vibe, but it also has a famous surf shop (Ron Jon). People of all ages flocked to the store simply to say they have been there.

Manasota Key

Off the coast of Sarasota on the west side of the state, this is a come-as-you-are, do-as-you-want kind of place. It also happens to be a great place for boating.

Clearwater

Not only is it on the water, but Clearwater is the spring training home of baseball’s Philadelphia Phillies. So there are about 15 to 20 nights each winter in February and March when you can be a beach bum during the day and a baseball fan at night.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands

You simply can’t have one without the other. Not only are these beaches spectacular, but the wildlife is amazing. And in some places, the lodging is just steps from the water. What a way to wake up and go to bed.

St. Augustine Beach

If you are looking for laid-back and easygoing, this might be the perfect place. Located just over the Florida-Georgia border in the northeast quadrant of the Sunshine State, St. Augustine is a great destination for culture seekers and history buffs.
