WHY IT RATES: Hotel Riu Palace Calypso in the Canary Islands has reopened after a full renovation, enhancing dining options, sea views, and accessibility, while adopting an Adults Only concept and sustainability improvements. —Janeen Christoff, TravelPulse Managing Editor

Hotel Riu Palace Calypso, located on Jandía beach in the Canary Islands, has just opened its doors following a full refurbishment that has expanded its dining options, redesigned all its spaces, improved accessibility and enhanced sea views from all parts of hotel, including all the rooms. Through the renovation, the hotel has been upgraded to RIU Palace’s top-of-the-line option and has been adapted to be part of RIU’s Adults Only concept.

The 4-star hotel still has 248 rooms and all of them have been completely renovated. The room terraces now offer an even more spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. The new design for the rooms is characterised by a timeless and elegant aesthetic, using a neutral colour palette. The refurbishment has created a calm and contemporary atmosphere that promotes guest relaxation.

All of Hotel Riu Palace Calypso’s communal areas have been completely renovated. The lobby has been extended and redesigned to optimise sea views from the moment the guest steps foot in the hotel, and to enhance natural light by using materials that promote brightness and spaciousness. The result is a design that exudes freshness and modernity, without losing the essence of classic style. More communal areas have also been added, including a new lounge bar outside, another one inside and a solarium with Balinese beds, ideal for the Adults Only hotel chilled out atmosphere.

The hotel’s dining options have become even more rich and refined to include three options with the addition of the Krystal restaurant, a gourmet à la carte space that complements the main restaurant and the snack bar, which have also been fully refurbished. Once again, natural light is key in the main restaurant’s design, creating a space with personality through elegance and simplicity.

In line with the company’s Proudly Committed sustainability strategy, the refurbishment includes significant energy efficient improvements in all facilities and the installation of solar panels. All baths have been replaced with showers in the rooms and filters have been installed in order to reduce water flow. The pool now runs with a salt water chlorination system. The hotel has improved accessibility in all its communal areas and has increased the number of accessible rooms to eight.

RIU has a total of 16 hotels in the Canary Islands: seven in Gran Canaria, four in Tenerife, one in Lanzarote and another four in Fuerteventura. Hotel Riu Palace Calypso’s refurbishment is the latest on a long list of renovations over the last few years, which demonstrates the chain’s solid commitment to the Canary Islands, RIU’s most important destination in Europe in terms of number of rooms and team members.
