Malta Travel Guide

Malta is a must-visit location because of the distinctive combination of history, culture, and natural beauty it offers.

On this small but varied Mediterranean island, you can experience a wide variety of activities thanks to its magnificent beaches, antiquated temples, and charming cities.

So if you’ve never been to Malta, browse through our Malta travel guide.

While renting a car is often a necessity when traveling abroad, Malta’s small size makes public transport ideal. We found Malta’s public bus network cheap and incredibly reliable to get around. With a commitment to safety and efficiency, they proved invaluable on our trip.

If you prefer to drive, there are a few options. These include the usual options such as taxis or ride-sharing apps like Uber. However, Malta offers a few more interesting ways to get around. Namely, water taxis!

Starting from both Sliema and Senglea and making their way to Valletta, water taxis offer an exciting alternative to taking the bus. As far as we’re concerned, you can’t visit Malta and not give one of these a try. Amazing views, a short trip over water, and reasonable pricing make water taxis a convenient novelty.

When To Visit Malta

While the cooler seasons mean fewer tourists, we recommend visiting Malta when the weather is warm. There’s nothing more refreshing than a cool swim after a walk through the warm Summer sun.

If you go outside of Summer, we recommend Autumn. Malta’s Autumn offers cooler weather without feeling cold. Averaging 71°F (22°C), you won’t need to go swimming, but you can still enjoy some fun in the sun.

Best Places To Stay In Malta

  • Valletta. Malta’s capital city may not feel very grand considering its size, but appearances can be deceiving. Before long, you’ll fall in love with the city’s beautiful architecture and culture. These amazing pieces of architecture include Triton’s Fountain, which proudly greets all newcomers. There’s also the city gate designed by Renzo Piano, the famous architect behind The Shard in London.

But Valletta doesn’t just offer beautiful surroundings. In our opinion, no trip to the capital could be complete without a walk down Republic Street, the main entertainment hub. Around every corner, we found another bakery, museum, or library we wanted to explore.

  • Sliema. If you’re looking for a city with a vibrant nightlife, then Sliema is our recommendation. Here, you’ll find a wide range of designer boutiques, trendy bars, and a seaside promenade. If you’re keen to venture out onto the water, book a boat ride for an hour or so.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of side street coffee shops to help if you want to slow things down. Sliema is definitely the more lively city, so keep that in mind when choosing where to go.
