The Netherlands Travel Guide

A cultural hub of classic and modern art, historical sites, charming cobbled streets, and incomparable nightlife, the Netherlands is a European jewel that you are bound to fall in love with.

Learn about that and more in our travel guide for the Netherlands.

In our experience, the easiest way to travel between cities and towns in the Netherlands is by train. These are fast and efficient and are relatively affordable.

If you are looking to travel between places frequently during your trip, we suggest enquiring about daily or weekly tickets that cost a bit more but offer unlimited train travel during that period. This will likely work out cheaper than buying single tickets for every trip.

Bus travel is also a popular mode of transport as it is even cheaper than rail travel, and may be more convenient to get you as close as possible to your destination. The trip duration is longer, but if you have time on your side this may be a preferable budget-friendly option.

The bus is also a fantastic public transport option to get around within cities.

The Netherlands, and Amsterdam in particular, is synonymous with cycling. If you are looking for a fun, eco-friendly way to get around the cities, you can look to rent a bike at a low daily rate. The cities are generally very cyclist-friendly, so you should have no difficulties getting around.

  • Amsterdam: When it comes to the capital city, Amsterdam is preceded by its reputation for picturesque streets lining the canal, iconic arts and culture institutions, and a grand nightlife scene.

Enjoy the laidback energy of the city with strolls along the canal or spending hours at a local restaurant or cafe. Some of our favorite attractions include Anne Frank’s House, Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark, Rijksmuseum, and more.

  • Rotterdam: A standout city in the Netherlands for its modern design and architecture, the port city of Rotterdam is an interesting contrast to the more traditional facades of the other cities.

The futuristic design came about after the city had to be almost completely redone after WWII. The best sights include Euromast, Cube Houses, and Rotterdam Zoo.

  • The Hague:  To experience Dutch opulence in its truest form, look no further than the elegant city of The Hague.

The architecture has a strong Gothic influence, and the city features Noordeinde Palace, the home of the Dutch royal family. You can also visit Mauritshuis, Louwman Museum, Peace Palace, and more.
